Frequently asked questions
Are lessons available to Kashmiris only?
Our lessons are open to anyone interested in learning Kashmiri. While our primary mission is language preservation and addressing language loss within the global Kashmiri diaspora and in urban areas of Kashmir, our classes welcome learners from all backgrounds. For students without a direct connection to Kashmir, we generally recommend our group classes. The collaborative format provides a supportive learning environment and offers opportunities to connect with other learners. Although our program is headquartered in the United States, we are an international and multilateral program. To comply with legal and financial requirements and to protect our tutors, most of whom are based in Jammu and Kashmir, we are unable to take students and/or payments originating from Pakistan due to current J&K laws.
Private lessons are out of my budget, what other options do I have?
Kashmiri is a highly complex language requiring specialized instruction, and our tutors invest significant time in preparing customized curriculum and supporting each learner’s progress. Our pricing reflects the level of expertise, preparation, and quality needed to preserve and teach the language responsibly. At the same time, we understand that our private language instruction may not fit every budget. For learners seeking a more affordable option, we offer discounted group lessons that provide a structured learning environment at a lower cost. We also have "Circles" a completely free speaking group, open to everyone as well as free resources that we provide via our website and Instagram page as well.
Can’t I just pay my tutor directly instead of Vale Academy?
We are committed to creating meaningful remote employment opportunities for Kashmiris while providing high-quality Kashmiri language education to learners. Vale Academy is more than just a business. Our tutors are partners in a collective mission to take actionable steps to preserve our native language. We ask all students to respect the integrity of our program by following our policies and supporting the structure that allows our academy and tutor community to grow. Students are expected to refrain from bypassing the academy by arranging lessons directly with tutors, as this can undermine the sustainability of our team and limit our ability to create meaningful remote work opportunities for Kashmiri educators worldwide. Maintaining this structure allows us to continue investing in quality language education, supporting our tutors, and advancing our broader mission of preserving and promoting the Kashmiri language.
What is your fee structure?
Every learner has different goals, schedules, and learning needs, so our pricing is tailored rather than one-size-fits-all. We take into account factors such as lesson frequency, package structure, regional affordability, and fair compensation standards for tutors across different geographic locations. Our goal is to keep our program as accessible as possible while ensuring that our native-speaking tutors are fairly compensated for their time, expertise, and lesson preparation. During our first year of operations, our tuition rates and program structure were different. Thanks to careful budgeting and sustainable program management, we are pleased to have reduced our overall fees while maintaining the quality of our instruction. A small portion of each registration fee supports the operation of the program. These funds do not go toward paying our team, but it helps budget for essential administrative costs and allow us to invest in future projects, learning resources, technology, and software.
Message from the Founder
"My family has more than 6 generations of recorded roots in Downtown Srinagar. My parents left Kashmir in the 1980s for USA. They understood that immigrants in America could face pressure because of their accents, and as a result, they encouraged me and my siblings to prioritize English. At the time, assimilation was a common experience among many Kashmiri families in the diaspora. Some families in North America and UK prioritized English, while others who migrated to places like Delhi or Jammu, focused on Urdu or Hindi. I grew up hearing Kashmiri every day and visited Kashmir often, so the Kashmiri language and culture was well known for me, but I could understand only, and not speak fluently. As I grew older, I felt a deeper desire to reconnect with the language. I completed my master’s degree in Global Studies, and worked as an English language teacher throughout my studies. Along the way, I learned additional languages, but Kashmiri remained the most challenging language for me to fully master through self-study.That experience shaped my understanding of the challenges faced by many heritage learners: having a connection to a language, but lacking accessible pathways to learn it. It became the foundation for my vision of creating a space where others could reconnect with Kashmiri through structured, culturally rooted, and community-driven education. I searched for online resources for years. I asked my parents and relatives to practice with me. I was able to use basic phrases, but I struggled to speak confidently. Eventually, I realized the challenge was not a lack of motivation. There simply was no clear, structured path for people like me whose families had migrated outside Kashmir. While teaching online through my own business, I became increasingly interested in linguistics, language acquisition, and community language preservation. I saw firsthand how important structure, consistency, and the right teaching methods are when learning a language. I also recognized that Kashmiri deserved the same level of care and accessibility as other world languages.
In July 2024, I founded Vale Academy as a small private online academy with one goal: to make high-quality Kashmiri language instruction accessible to learners anywhere in the world. From the beginning, I believed Kashmiri deserved the same structure and resources as any other language. Premium language education requires thoughtful curriculum, skilled teachers, and investment in the people who make it possible. Expertise in a language as rich as Kashmiri deserves to be valued and supported. Since then, Vale Academy has continued to grow. We work with native-speaking tutors who create custom curriculum and are compensated for their expertise and time. Our booking system makes it possible for students to learn across different time zones, and every student receives the guidance and support needed to feel encouraged throughout their learning journey. At its heart, Vale Academy is our community investing in itself. We are building the kind of learning environment many of us wished existed when we were searching for a way back to Kashmiri. Whether you are reconnecting with your heritage, learning for your family, or discovering Kashmiri for the first time, we are happy to welcome you. If you have been meaning to start learning Kashmiri, or have been putting it off for years, this is a place to begin."
